Penguin Diplomacy by Mereo Books

Brian Birley Roberts (1912-1978) was acknowledged among the polar community in his time as Britain’s foremost expert on the Antarctic, and was the main driving force behind the Antarctic Treaty which has protected the region for the past 60 years. A scientist of enormous determination and dedication, he devoted much of his life to the protection of wilderness and wildlife. Yet he was a self-effacing man who preferred to avoid the limelight. Largely because of this, to the outside world he is almost unknown.

The authors are Steve Heavens and June Roberts, Brian’s niece, who have researched numerous unpublished archives, including Brian Roberts’ own detailed, extensive and often very entertaining diaries.

Women Who Served in World War II by Mereo Books

‘Women Who Served in World War II’ is the culmination of ten years of research, and is a collection of portraits and testimonials recording the experiences of 21 women who volunteered during World War II, interviewed by the author.

The accounts have been left as far as possible in the women’s original words, so that their voices can be heard clearly and faithfully. The women featured in this book are among many who did much behind the scenes without much in the way of recognition.

It was not until 2005 that their contribution to the war effort was recognised with a memorial dedicated to the women of World War Two in Whitehall, London. These women are some of the last alive to speak about their wartime experiences in their own words.

Rachel Vogeleisen is a professional photographer specialising in women’s portraits and fashion. Her fascination with the Second World War was sparked by her discovery as a child that her grandfather, from Alsace, had had to fight for the Germans against Russia.

Oceans of Champagne by Mereo Books

Edwin (Eddie) Scott knew from boyhood that he wanted to entertain people.

His talent for making people laugh helped him to make a living as a Butlins Redcoat and later an Entertainments Director on board cruise ships, while he also worked as a ‘walk-on’ in a host of hit TV series including Hi de Hi, ‘Allo ‘Allo, Only Fools and Horses and The Bill. A more serious side of his personality led to him becoming an expert bridge player, qualifying as a teacher and becoming a professional. Along the way, despite a somewhat turbulent personal life featuring one or two run-ins with alcohol, he and his wife raised three beautiful daughters. This is his story.

Drafting Guide for Private Legal Documents

This book is intended for drafters of contracts, leases, wills and other private documents in England and Wales who want to produce instruments that are effective, clear and pleasing – both for the drafter and the reader.

The book is based on drafting guidance published by the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel in Whitehall, London. This second edition adds a number of entire document precedents showing how the principles in the
earlier part of the book can work in practice. The book shuns legalese and demonstrates how standard English is more than adequate for the job. Moreover it illustrates how presentation and layout play a big part in making a formal document readable. Colour printing is used to aid understanding.

RICHARD CASTLE is a solicitor with considerable experience of drafting legal documents. He was co-author of ‘Modern Legal Drafting’ (CUP), 2nd edition 2006 and has written a number of other books and articles. He studied, worked and lived in Cambridge for many years, and now lives in Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

The History of Exercise Hardfall by Mereo Books

The “Story of Hardfall” is a book about the 35 winters in the Voss mountains of Norway which, for most of those years, involved about 1500 British soldiers and over 100 Norwegian officers who served as liaison officers and instructors. The British were there to train under Arctic conditions, to learn to ski and to survive outside under conditions they certainly were not used to. Exercise Hardfall had a large impact on the Voss area during those winters. Some of the training also took part in the Hardanger, Sogn and Nordfjord.

In this book, about 30 people have written about their memories from Exercise Hardfall. This book is about tough treks in snow and bitterly cold weather, about dramatic experiences and about friendship and co-operation. The book is richly illustrated.

The original Norwegian publication was compiled by Olav Allen (b. 1934) from Eikefjord. He is a farmer and a Major in the Norwegian Norway’s home guard, the Heimevernet. He has farmed since 1959 and worked in the Services for 7-8 years. He took part in 25 Hardfall exercises and also one winter with the RAF in Sandane/Anda. Aalen has also been the leader of the Districtboard HV-10 for 8 years, a member of Flora town council for 12 years and the leader for various agricultural organisations.
