Another Yin Oan A Wan Way Tickut - Brian Brown

Another Yin Oan A Wan Way Tickut

Another Yin Oan A Wan Way Tickut is Brian Brown’s personal diary of his rise from Belisha Boy signalman up to the giddy heights of 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals between 1939 until 1945. Brian had a varied career in the Army including 3 ½ years as a prisoner of war after being ordered by CIC Percival to surrender to the Japanese at the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942. The Diary takes Brian from Singapore to PamPong to work on building the new spur of railway which extended to Rangoon to join up with the existing railway. On the journey, in spite of the deprivation of hunger, illness & fatigue which accumulated from being held prisoner in appalling conditions, Brian worked with Indian elephants, herded cattle and ate any stray pigs which crossed his path – these experiences contributed to his decision to become a farmer later in life.

An Unjust Hanging - Dave Halliwell

An Unjust Hanging

An Unjust Hanging begins one winter’s evening in 1821, stung by his girlfriend Eliza’s rejection, 17-year-old John Horwood picked up a stone and flung it at her. That thoughtless act of fury was to cost both these young people their lives. A prominent surgeon who clearly placed his own reputation above the care of his patients carried out an operation on Eliza which he must have known would probably kill her – as it did. Smith kept her skull for teaching purposes, and when John was sentenced to hang for her death he made sure the youth’s body would be his to dismember. He even had a book bound with John Horwood’s skin. When Mary Halliwell, a descendant of John Horwood, unearthed this grotesque and shocking story, she and her husband Dave went into action. 190 years after the fateful day when John’s young life was so unjustly snuffed out, they finally managed to arrange a Christian burial for his remains.

An Ordinary Man

An Ordinary Man

Michael Boyd’s modestly-titled autobiography ‘An Ordinary Man’ begins with peaceful memories of growing up in the 1950s in a Somerset village, playing football and going fishing and bird-nesting in the woods and marshes around Chew Valley Lake. After a brief career in the dairy business, Mike found himself plunged into the stormy world of industrial relations as a manager with the brewery giant Courage. His talent for handling negotiations with the trade unions led him to a senior operational job before he finally retired back to the peace of family life and his beloved garden.

An Idiot and A Broad - Stephanie Hansell

An Idiot and A Broad

Stephanie and Tony Hansell had always promised themselves they would see the world one day, but they did not finally take the plunge until they popped into a travel agency one wet Saturday – and came out two hours later having booked a six-month trip to the far side of the world, taking in Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, New Zealand, Australia and Chile. An Idiot and a Broad is the tale of their adventures, from rainforests to glaciers, from the Killing Fields to Copacabana and from night clubs and glorious beaches to slums and animal sanctuaries. It is packed with hilarious and often gritty tales of encounters with beggars, rip-off merchants, fellow travellers and a host of native wildlife, from kangaroos to cockroaches.

All About Scotland

All About Scotland

Scotland is a byword for scenic beauty, thanks to its soaring, heather-clad mountainsides, breath-taking lakes and rivers and savagely beautiful coastline. It is also synonymous with rugged independence, having been the scene of fierce conflict many times since the glens were first occupied by man 13,000 years ago after the last ice age. How did Scotland become part of the United Kingdom, and how would independence affect it? In September 2014, 700 years after the Scots’ glorious victory over the English at the Battle of Bannockburn, five million Scottish residents will vote on the question of whether their country should become the independent nation which many of them long for. This book is packed with fascinating facts about Scotland, its savage past, its proud people and its stunning scenery and wildlife.
