Blind Pursuit by Mereo Books

Blind Pursuit is the story of Detective Inspector John Steadman: Someone from the DI’s past hated or feared him enough to hire professional killers to murder him and his wife. The hit was carried out with ruthless efficiency, except for one detail. The bullet that smashed into Steadman’s skull left him blind, but still alive – and still equipped with one of the finest minds in the force. As Steadman learns to live with the loss of his sight, his fearless pursuit of the criminal fraternity continues unabated. But to achieve his ultimate goal – to bring to justice the man who robbed him of his vision and his wife – he has nothing to go on except a chilling series of nightmares and a voice; a voice he feels sure he has heard somewhere before.

Enjoy Blind Pursuit by Jake Buchan. The two plots of the book work well and do not distract from each other. Seems to have been thoroughly researched and is keeps you guessing to the end. Slightly slow to start but keep going you will thoroughly enjoy it and feel increasingly reluctant to put it down – Dr Sheila Calder

Black Hatted Cowboys - Bryan Marlowe

Black Hatted Cowboys

The building and repair work carried out by dangerously incompetent and unscrupulous builders, often known as “cowboys,” is widely reported in newspapers and investigations into their nefarious activities are popular and thought-provoking television documentaries. This publicity helps to warn the unwary of the misery, unjustifiable costs and even death that can result by employing unskilled building workers to carry out improvements and, often-unnecessary, repairs to their homes. These Black Hatted Cowboys will always ask for “cash-up-front” before he starts to work. Later, he will ask for more cash, because he “under-estimated the work and material needed to finish the job”. If the householder is unable or unwilling to part with more money, the cowboy will leave the property in such a state that it is an unsafe dwelling. Black Hatted Cowboys tells the story of two men who are prepared to take deadly retributive action against cowboy builders.

Bitter Sweet - Juanita Nena Rudonbeeke

Bitter Sweet

Juanita RudonBeeke’s poems in Bitter Sweet go straight to the heart and are reflections on a wide range of human relationships. She writes with love and sympathy, but never with blinkers on, for she does not conceal the injustices, the cruelties, and the betrayals, so often manifested in the modern world and as often demonstrated in her beloved country of Belize. I love the gentle wisdom, the acceptance of the ineluctable mutability of life, in ‘Those to Heaven Sing’. All of the poems have this sense of mature acceptance. The gentle probing about the mystery of life in ‘Time Without End’ leaves one with a sense of wonder. I do like these poems for they leave no dregs of anger or frustration at the bottom of the cup, as it were, when you have read them. If anything, they leave a sweetness, albeit sometimes a bitter sweetness, when you have closed the book. Also, you can read them again, coming back to them like a refreshing stream.’ – Charles Muller.

Bite Size World - Roger Frankham

Bite Size World

The idea for Bite Size World came from a game Roger Frankham used to play with food-minded friends involving spinning a globe blindfold and throwing a dinner party based on the food of the country where your finger landed. Roger soon realised that a whole world of cuisine was out there that he knew absolutely nothing about. The idea so fascinated him that he abandoned his job and set out on a once-in-a-lifetime tour of the planet, armed with just a suitcase, some phrase books and his palate. Eight months and twenty-five countries later, there had been ‘fifty-three moments when I took a bite of something so amazing that everything seemed to stop around me’, as well as a few experiences he wouldn’t go through again to save his life. They are all in Bite Size World – along with the merely good, the disappointing and the inedible. Anyone fancy rotten Icelandic shark?

Autumn's Colours - Nick Holloway

Autumn's Colours

Nick Holloway’s nursing career was spent working in care homes in South Wales. His many experiences, sad, shocking, harrowing, uplifting, depressing and amusing, inspired him to write Autumn’s Colours, his first novel. This light-hearted story is set in an imaginary care home in the Dorset town of Dorchester, the town in which Nick trained as a nurse. The people and events in the book are based closely on real care homes, real people and real towns. They squabble, chat, fall out, banter, make friends and attempt to seduce each other – just like people in the outside world. The events described in Autumn’s Colours will be familiar to anyone who works in a care home, or who visits somebody in one.
