The Ladies of Dunster Castle by Mereo Books

With a documented history stretching back a thousand years, Dunster Castle in Somerset is one of Britain’s oldest and most intriguing great buildings, its turrets evoking centuries of warfare, dark deeds, bloodshed and treachery. What makes it particularly unusual is the prominent role women have played in its fortunes, from the indomitable Joan de Mohun in the 14th century, who promised as much land to the villagers as she could walk around barefoot in a day, to Lady Jane Luttrell, who saw off a Royalist attack during the English Civil War by personally commanding the cannons. Jim Lee worked for many years at the castle and knows more about it than just about anyone. Here he presents an entertaining history of the roles, from the heroic to the self-indulgent, its women have played over the centuries.

The Unthronged Oracle

Laura Riding was a major poet whose poems, though widely admired and influential, have been little understood. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s she was ‘a devout advocate of poetry’ believing that ‘to go to poetry is the most ambitious act of the mind’. Her subsequent renunciation of poetry in the 1940s gave rise to bemusement. Jack Blackmore tackles the causes of the neglect of Riding’s poetry and establishes new and productive approaches to the poems. His close readings of fifteen poems demonstrate the progress of Collected Poems and the remarkable range and scope of her poetry. He establishes both the strength and unity of the poems and the continuity between them and her ‘post-poetic’ work, in particular her spiritual testament The Telling. After leaving the Merchant Navy Kevin Cooney started out on his own with a humble back-garden engineering shop. A chance encounter led him to specialise in manufacturing stainless steel components for yachts, and it wasn’t long before he caught the sailing bug himself. Thanks to ingenuity, determination and a great deal of hard work, Kevin managed to pilot Cooney Marine successfully through the difficult decades of British industrial strife and build it into the largest independent supplier of stainless steel rails and fittings in the UK. Now semi-retired and with his son at the helm, Kevin is free to indulge his passion by sailing the oceans and even crossing the Atlantic several times. This book is based on the diary he has been keeping for more than 40 years.

Memoir of M.H.Khan

Musharraf Husain Khan, born in 1931 in what was then part of East Pakistan, embarked on a naval career which eventually led to his promotion to Admiral. He became a leading figure in the government of the new country of Bangladesh, and as Chief of the Naval Staff in the 1970s he even served briefly as Acting President. He lived through the upheavals of the Bangladesh Liberation War and was close to its premier, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was murdered with his family in a bloody coup in 1975. In more peaceful times, M H Khan drove the creation and development of the Bangladesh Navy and led Bangladesh’s campaign to persuade India to reduce abstraction from the Ganges, which was causing immense hardship to his country further downriver. In this autobiography he tells his story and reflects on issues vital to his country, from religion and education to shipping, fishing and international relations.

From MTV to Mecca by Mereo Books

In the early 1990’s Kristiane Backer was one of the very first presenters of MTV Europe. For some years she lived and breathed the international music scene, quickly gaining a cult following amongst viewers and becoming a darling of European press. As she reached the pinnacle of her success she realised that, despite having all she could have wished for, she was never truly satisfied. Something very important was missing.

A fateful meeting with Pakistani cricket hero Imran Khan changed her life. He invited her to his country where she encountered a completely different world from the one she knew, the religion and culture of Islam. Instead of pop and rock stars she was meeting men and women whose lives were dominated by the love of God and who cared very little for the brief glories of this world. She began to read the Quaran and to study books about the Faith. A few years later, after travelling more widely in the Islamic world and knowing that she had discovered her spiritual path, she embraced Islam in a London mosque. And then her real adventures began.

In this very personal memoir Kristiane Backer tells the story of her conversion and explains how faith, despite the many challenges she faced, has given her inner peace and the meaning she sought.

To Be A Soldier

This book is based on an imaginary diary written by a Christian soldier in World War II, from the opening of hostilities in 1939 to the end of the war in 1945. The accounts of events it covers are based on fact but, as in any military force, rumours and speculation abound from day to day. At times our soldier seeks to add a touch of light-hearted humour, sometimes necessary to sustain morale. The soldier’s diary looks at some of these events, together with thoughts about his family and personal life at the time, and reflects on the events of the war as they relate to his Christian life.

Burdened but Unruffled

Launched in 1942 as World War II was raging, HMS Unruffled patrolled the oceans for the remainder of the hostilities, destroying nearly 40,000 tons of enemy shipping – and one train – before retiring, battered and bruised but glorious, and without losing a man. James Gregan’s home town of Colchester adopted the vessel and took its gallant crew to its heart, and more than 70 years on, Gregan has written this book to celebrate the forgotten submarine which he describes as ‘not just another piece of war machinery but a boat which helped thirty-three heroes to survive a war when so many brave young men did not return’.

Nick miller was an exemplary teacher and educationalist, a talented rock musician, a perceptive poet, a devout Christian and an adored husband and father, as well as a man with a passion for life. during his career in schools in the uK, Hong Kong, Singapore and Belgium he blazed a trail through the educational world and earned the love and respect of countless colleagues and pupils. before he died at the age of just 61 he was able to complete this inspiring life story, to which his wife Alison has since put the finishing touches.
