Family Matters

Su Gutteridge’s grandmother Florence married Frank Ginns at the beginning of the 20th century and they soon had two children. But Frank’s health was being ruined by drinking, and when he became ill and died at the age of only 28, she married a local churchwarden, William Gutteridge. Florence and William found great happiness together, and worked hard to build up a successful funeral business, Ginns & Gutteridge, which is today one of the most respected undertakers in England. Having researched the early years of her family, Su has now written this intriguing dramatized account of the years when undertakers used horses and it was still unusual for women to have a hand in business.

Perkin

Perkin Warbeck appeared from nowhere and claimed to be Richard Duke of York, the younger son of Edward IV – one of the ‘Princes in the Tower’.

To some people, including the influential and rich Margaret Duchess of Burgundy, he was the real thing – tall and handsome like her brother the late king and a true heir to the Plantagenet legacy.

Others suspected that he was an imposter; but they couldn’t be certain. And in the whole of Europe, only Janet Evershed knew the truth: that he was, indeed, the son of King Edward, but a bastard with no claim to
the throne.
Perkin saw himself as a chivalrous Knight of the Round Table, coming to rescue the downtrodden English from a murderous tyrant usurper. But the reality of his situation did not match his shining vision and offered him questions instead of answers. What was the right thing to do?

This is the third part of the trilogy Sprigs of Broom:

Look What Chemistry Did For Me

This is the story of a life spent largely in the world of chemistry, mainly as a college or university-level teacher. It is also the story of an ordinary boy, a child of the war years, who rose from an unpromising start, leaving school at 16 with four mediocre O Levels, to become more successful and fulfilled in a career than he had ever imagined possible, eventually becoming a university professor. The book also describes the immense contribution made to our lives by chemical research and the chemical industry.

Nora’s Recipes by Mereo Books

Nora Newton (nee Clementi) learned to cook at her mother’s knee in the years of World War II and later developed her skills through more than 60 years of happy marriage to Tony, enthusiastically experimenting with French, Italian and Asian dishes as well as those from the British Isles while preparing a near-constant supply of superb meals for her four children, nine grandchildren and the family at large. An early follower of Elizabeth David, Jane Grigson and Marguerite Patten and later a devotee of Gary Rhodes and Nigel Slater, she developed many recipes of her own, though she was always far too modest to claim expertise. This book was compiled by her son Chris and published on what would have been Nora’s 88th birthday.

Sleeping With The Rabbits

Susanne Defoe suffered parental violence and bullying at school on a daily basis throughout her childhood, finding comfort only with her pet rabbits: “One of my first memories was of climbing into the rabbit hutch and snuggling down into the straw to sleep… I just stayed there until they found me. I was only two and a half and I was missing for almost two hours.” Desperate to escape from her controlling father and ignorant mother, she found herself pregnant at fifteen by a boy who turned out to be a waster who spent all his wages in the pub. This is the story of how Susanne struggled to escape from a life of abuse, cruelty and ignorance to try to gain some self-respect and a decent life for herself and her four daughters.

Sergeant Jack

The Second World War has just finished, doggy food supplies are desperately short, and the Terriertorial Army has discovered that all its carefully-saved treats have been stolen in a daring raid by a marauding pack of bulldogs from across the Channel. Major Freddie, the Airedale commander, calls an emergency meeting of all the terriers. How will Sergeant Jack the Jack Russell, Melvyn, Lucky, Willy and the rest of the four-footed army get their treasured nibbles back – and stop the greedy Seedric and his companions from getting their paws on their food again? Described by the author as ‘a sort of doggy Dad’s Army’, this story will delight children aged seven to eleven.

Behold, I Have Foretold You All Things

During study of the scriptures for his previous book, Alpha and Omega, it became apparent to the author that when the Lord talked to the disciples about His coming for Israel, He also intimated that there is likely to be a period of delay between the signs of His expected coming, and His actual appearance for them as their Messiah. In the light of this the author decided to follow through and find out what this period may involve, and his conclusions are set out in this book.

Whilst Israel, the Lord’s people, remain special to Him, even more important is that His Word and promises will be kept, and that His Father’s will is completed in its perfection. This book is an attempt to interpret how Israel will be expected to play its part, and how in the process it will be proved faithful before the Lords return.

The Deep Thoughts of Jim Emerton

Champion pigeon racer, lover of wild creatures and wild places, MENSA member, philosopher –in retirement Jim Emerton now devotes his time and energies to sharing his experiences, his observations and his expertise with others who share his interests and concerns. This is a collection of Jim’s more philosophical writings as originally published in MENSA publications, including the members’ periodical Cognito. They are in general his attempts, as he puts it, to ‘verbalise the unknowable’.

“I have had a great life… I have travelled a lot, run a business, been a salesman, I was a record-breaking shot and until I was 30 I had never been beaten at arm wrestling. Over the years I have developed my own personal belief system fusing science and art in philosophy.”

Turbulent Times & Clear Skies

As a senior aeronautical engineer with Britain’s flagship airlines in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was engineer and playboy Nazie El Masry’s job to keep these man-made birds in perfect flying condition. Turbulent Times and Clear Skies is the story of his colourful exploits in the most glamorous industry of all, as he defeated the odds to build an international aviation business of his own – with offices in Singapore, Miami, Holland and the UK. From the crew and pilots’ parties to which he supplied contraband liquor and introductions to the wildest international hotspots in Libya, Tunis, Casablanca and Europe; to his early adventures wheeling and dealing in 1970s Britain, along the way Nazie has rubbed shoulders with slum landlords, show girls, heads of state and movie stars. This is also the story of an Egyptian childhood and a young man who lost his father but found happiness.

The Story of a Geological Limestone Landscape

Some years ago Edward Cole, a West Indian living in London, discovered an extraordinary natural limestone landscape on land he had bought in Trelawny, Jamaica, to build a house. Ever since the discovery he has worked tirelessly to expose and display the stones, created by nature millions of years ago and since buried by earth, trees and bushes, in order to allow them to be seen by the public. There are few if any other places in the world where you can see such a rich array of examples of nature’s work in carving rock formations from limestone. They have now been used to create an artful range of displays as the basis of the Limestone Garden. This book is designed to inspire the reader and to reach a wider geological audience.
