Fighting for a Fairer World by Mereo Books
by Bert Massie
Sir Bert Massie (1949-2017) campaigned lifelong for rights for disabled people. Born in the back streets of Liverpool and himself crippled through contracting polio as a baby, he fought his way through the education system to become a Bachelor of Arts and a qualified social worker, discovering on the way the many barriers society places in the path of anyone with a disability who wants to achieve success.
After being awarded the OBE in his thirties and receiving a CBE in 2000, he was knighted in 2007. He served as Chairman of the Disability Rights Commission and was a founding commissioner of its successor, the Equality and Human Rights Commission. This is his engaging story, completed by his wife Maureen and friends after his death in October 2017.
