Drafting Guide for Private Legal Documents

by Richard Castle

This book is intended for drafters of contracts, leases, wills and other private documents in England and Wales who want to produce instruments that are effective, clear and pleasing – both for the drafter and the reader.

The book is based on drafting guidance published by the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel in Whitehall, London. This second edition adds a number of entire document precedents showing how the principles in the
earlier part of the book can work in practice. The book shuns legalese and demonstrates how standard English is more than adequate for the job. Moreover it illustrates how presentation and layout play a big part in making a formal document readable. Colour printing is used to aid understanding.

RICHARD CASTLE is a solicitor with considerable experience of drafting legal documents. He was co-author of ‘Modern Legal Drafting’ (CUP), 2nd edition 2006 and has written a number of other books and articles. He studied, worked and lived in Cambridge for many years, and now lives in Tetbury, Gloucestershire.
