John Treweek

John Treweek is a former academic, theatre director and lifelong student of history and archaeology. His fiction combines rigorous historical research with compelling storytelling, exploring identity, memory and the hidden lives of people overlooked by history.  His debut novel, Secrets of the Scrolls, draws upon his fascination with archaeology and the ancient world, weaving together the buried histories of Roman Herculaneum with contemporary themes of power, truth and belonging.

John Treweek began his professional life as a medical researcher at University College London before returning to academia to pursue an MA in Cultural Studies and a career in education and teaching.  During the early part of this second career he founded and directed a professional theatre company whose productions received critical attention, including reviews in The Guardian. Following a distinguished career in further education, including service as a college director, he turned his attention to long-form fiction and the historical themes that had fascinated him throughout his life.  A lifelong student of archaeology, history and classical civilisation, Treweek brings exceptional depth of research to his writing. His debut novel, Secrets of the Scrolls, combines the mysteries of the buried Roman world with contemporary questions of identity, justice and historical memory.  His writing is characterised by richly imagined settings, emotional intelligence and a deep interest in the lives of those frequently omitted from traditional historical narratives. He is currently completing a sequence of further novels exploring themes ranging from the First Fleet to neuroscience, astronomy and reimagined folklore.  John Treweek lives in the United Kingdom and continues to write historical and literary fiction inspired by his lifelong fascination with the past and the stories hidden beneath its surface.
